For most Sikh children, Punjabi school is a necessity. Waking up early on a Sunday to spend at least an hour in a hot classroom filled with many, many kids. Trust me, we’ve heard all the complaints. It’s boring, I don’t understand anything, the teacher yells at me, the test is too hard, etc. We all are thinking about the other things we could be doing on a weekend. But instead, we go to Punjabi school. There must be a reason. There must be a reason for why we quit everything else and go to that class.
Forget about all your complaints and think, “Why is Punjabi school so important?” Punjabi school is the main way to learn about your religion, your mother-tongue, and your history. Without that class, you will not learn about the things that make Sikhism so unique. Now is the time to learn how to read Punjabi/Gurmukhi, write in Punjabi, speak in Punjabi, etc. In the future, you may regret not learning how to do all this. Punjabi class is the first step in becoming a better Sikh. It will answer most of your questions that you have about Sikhism. Why do we keep our hair, what is so important about Paath, why do we bow our heads in front of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji?
Punjabi school doesn’t last forever, and thankfully, it is only on Sundays. You may even make great new memories in that same classroom that you have always hated walking into. Punjabi school only exists to teach you about your religion, so enjoy the time that you spend in it. Be sure to make new memories every week. The time you got caught sneaking out of class, the time you got in trouble because you couldn’t recite the full alphabet, the time you ditched class to eat pakoras with your friends. Because by the time you learn to enjoy it, it will almost be over.
